Out to Sea

One of my long time interests has been the history of ships that sail the sea. Something about growing up on the ocean, going to high school in Gloucester, MA, owning my own sailboat, and coming across a book on the naval war of 1898 in the local public library at about age 12. This all kind of slipped into the background for a long time until one of my daughters gave me a copy of Master and Commander for Christmas one year. Patrick O’Brian got me back into naval history in a big way. So now I subscribe to a couple of nautical history magazines, joined the National Maritime Historical Society and generally do a lot of reading on the topic. As you can see from some of the links I visit museum ships when travel allows. I’ll post assorted bits and bobs on this page as things develop.
Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing-absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
